During the consultation, our doctors will assess the anatomic relationships in the maxillofacial region, perform a cephalometric (skull X-ray) analysis, and sometimes a naso-pharyngeal exam using a flexible fiber-optic camera. In some cases, a sleep study may be recommended to monitor an individual overnight and confirm the level of cardiovascular compromise and decreased oxygenation levels.

Sleep Apnea Solutions

There are several treatment options available for sleep apnea. An initial treatment may involve using a nasal Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) machine, which delivers pressurized oxygen through a nasal mask to limit obstruction at night. For those who prefer surgical options, our team offers uvulo-palato-pharyngo-plasty (UPPP) or a laser-assisted uvulo-palato-plasty (LAUPP) to tighten the soft palate. In more complex cases, orthognathic surgery may be recommended, which involves repositioning the bones of the upper and lower jaw to increase the size of the airway.

These procedures are usually performed under light IV sedation in the office, while orthognathic surgery is done in the hospital under general anesthesia and requires a one to two-day overnight stay.
